Around Chennai

Chennai metropolitan area is spread over a sprawling 1,177 square kilometres.A number of small towns are located in the vicinity of Chennai and have been categorized as areas around Chennai. These satellite towns include Mammalapuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Sri Perumpudur, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam. Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram regions share their boundaries with the city. Some townships that are located in these regions like Ambattur in Tiruvallur is often considered as an extension of the city. The township has a topography similar to that of the city but as an administrative unit it comes under the jurisdiction of Tiruvallur.
