Perambur is one of the primary manufacturing areas, located in
north of the Chennai city. Tamil Nadu, the state of which Chennai is
capital, is known for the unparalled temples that have been erected
since times immemorial. The temples bear the distinction mark in the
state as well in the city. But there is one more special thing about
the Chennai city and that is automobile industry. It is due to the
large scale manufacturing of automobiles and automobile parts that
the city has earned eponym, the Detroit of India. The Perambur
suburbs is the centre of all these activities. Perambur houses a
number of coach building units. The residential population consists
of thse employed in these units and in Southern Railways unit. The
work shop of Southern Railways is rooted in the suburbs of Perambur.
The workshop is going to celebrate its 150 years of service this
very year (2006 A.D). The place features one of the oldest working
locomotive 'Fairy Queen'. The steam engine was manufactured by
Britian and later on acquired by the Perambur Locomotives Company.
One popular worshipping place in Perambur is that of Mayiladuturai
temple. The temple is crowned with Rajagopuram and features two
prakarams. Mayiladuturai is an ancient temple and belongs to the
Chola period. There is one more ancient temple, called Ananda
Eswarar or Ananda Perumal temple, located in the Perambur suburbs.
The main deities worshipped here are Lord Shiva (Siva) and Lord
Vishnu. The festivals held in the complex include those for Lord
Narayana in the Purattasi month, for Vinayaka, Dhanur Masa Festival,
Annabishekam, Sri Jayanthi, Thiru Adi Pooram. These are anuualy
celebrated festivals and the monthly festivals celebrated are
Pradosham, Krithigai, Pournami and Rahukala Poojas for Goddess
Durga.
The residential area is provided with adequate number of schools,
market places, medical centres and other such institutes. Provided
in local markets are some excellent shops that sell popular silk
sarees.
