Chennai city is hooked up with the rest of the cities of India as well with cities of other countries by a vast network of roads, railway lines, an airport and sea ports. It forms the gateway to Indian South. There are several modes of transportation available for the city with every mode highlighting its own distinctive features.

For longer distances and that two passengers there is Chennai Airport (Madras Airport). The airport features domestic as well as international terminal. Flights are available for Indian cities, several cities in the Middle East and European countries. The two sea ports located in the city, Chennai Port and Ennore Port, are responsible for the transportation of industrial cargo.

The Southern Railways provide railway services in the region. The city has two railway terminals called Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore and trains ply to the suburban regions and the neighboring cities. The Metro Railway Transportation System (MRTS) provides means of commutation in various suburban localities.

The popular means of commutation is provided by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). MTC maintains and runs hundreds of buses (exact figures somewhat close to 1,120) that helps in commuting within the city premises. Bus services are also available for nearest towns and cities. The popular means of travelling in the city continues to be by bus.
