Location
Pulicat is a small town in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu
state. The town is situated towards the north of the capital of
Tamil Nadu, Chennai city and is about 60 kilometres from the place.
Pulicat largely consists of the backwaters of the adjoining sea
which is Bay of Bengal. The lake, called Pulicat lake, situated here
constitutes a great picnic spot for Chennaites (residents of
Chennai).
Overview
Pulicat and its vast natural resources presents one great
attraction in the southern India. The place houses the second
largest lagoon of India, Pulicat lake. The lake as well the town is
one frequently visited picnic spots in the state. The lake has been
existing since time immemorial. The town, however, is considered to
be only six centuries old. The region features a number of
attractions including the bio-diversity at Pulicat lake and some
historical landmarks in the town. Sailing in the lake is considered
as one of the greatest amusements at Pulicat.
Pulicat lake, spread well over 350 sq.kilometres, is provided with
diverse natural resources in the form of aquatic life. The aquatic
resources include fishes, many edible aquatic life forms, reptiles,
insects, birds and animals. Fisheries including White Prawns, Tiger
Prawns, Mullets, Catfish, Green Crabs are some of the edible
resources of the lake. The northern parts of the lake features a
large migratory bird population in the winter season.
The town essentially comprises of the fishing community. There are,
but, people who are engaged in various other occupations. The
farmers cultivate the lands here and produce crops like cashew,
paddy, fruits and vegetables. The region around the lake constitutes
habitat to yet other species of birds and animals. More than 50
species of birds can be found at Pulicat farms and near the lake.
The Dutch cemetery and a ruined Dutch Fort are some of the last
impressions left behind by the colonial powers that used to occupy
the lands.
Accessibility
Pulicat lies in the north of Chennai. The buses plying on the
Nellore Highway Road provide the means of accessing the place.
