Location
Periyar Science and Technology Centre is one of the premier
institutions in the city of Chennai. The centre is located in the
premises of Kotturpuram region of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu
state. The complex lies a little distance away from the Gandhi
Mandappam Road and is accessible to public transport. The
Kotturpuram Railway Station and Kotturpuram Bus Stop are in located
nearby.
Overview
Periyar Science and Technology Centre was started in the year 1983.
The centre has been named after a great revolutionary leader and
visonary from South India, Thanthai Periyar. The visionary was among
the earliest advocates who supported modern scientific approaches in
understanding various phenomena. The centre exists as a multi
purpose science and technological centre aimed to bring awareness as
well developments in the said field. The ubiquitous Birla
Planetarium forms one of the parts of the centre. The complex built
over a good 21 acres of land is provided with great store houses of
information. The card-carrying complex consists of a number of
galleries. The five credited galleries of Periyar Science and
Technology Centre are Periyar's Teachings, Transport, Electronics &
Communication, Physical Sciences and Children's Hall of Sciences.
Features
Apart from Birla Planetarium, the hi-tech centre houses many
galleries that are quite inspiring. The galleries including Periyar
Gallery, Energy Gallery, Transport Gallery, Physical Science
Gallery, Electronics and Communication Gallery, Life Science Gallery
and Children's Gallery are some of the best place to explore in the
city. The galleries exhibit numerous working models, technological
innovations, audio video presentations, graphical and textual
information. The centre is responsible for hosting events, conduct
seminars and provide discourses on various issues relating to
science and technology. The primary objective of all the activities
at Periyar Science and Technology Centre is to build a scientific
temperament and as such help in the technological advancement of the
society.
Visiting Hours
The centre is open throughout the week, except on Mondays. The
visiting hours are from 10.00 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.
